DescriptionDemocrats: Late surge helps avoid need for runoff election

By Tom Loftus

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Former Lt. Gov. Steve Beshear rode a late campaign surge to capture the Democratic nomination for governor yesterday, with just enough votes to avoid a runoff.

The Lexington attorney won 41 percent of the vote in a crowded field of six Democrats. He needed 40 percent to avoid a June runoff election.

Louisville businessman Bruce Lunsford, who outspent all Democrats in the race by using $4.2million of his personal fortune, finished a distant second with 21 percent.

The other Democratic contenders were former Lt. Gov. Steve Henry of Louisville, with 17 percent; House Speaker Jody Richards of Bowling Green, 13 percent; Lexington attorney Gatewood Galbraith, 6 percent; and Harlan demolition contractor Otis Hensley, 1 percent.

"What a difference 20 years makes!" Beshear told jubilant supporters about 10 p.m. at the Capital Plaza Hotel in Frankfort, referring to his third-place finish in the 1987 Democratic gubernatorial primary. "Some people are just slow learners. It took me 20 years to learn how to win this race, but we learned how to do it today."
