Description | State Rep. Russell Pearce issued a conditional call this afternoon for John McCain's resignation, noting his absenteeism from the Senate while he campaigns for president.
The Arizona Republic reported in March that McCain had missed about a third of his votes in the Senate this session. Since then, reports in Mother Jones and elsewhere have noted that the percentage is now up to roughly half his votes with the 110th Congress. By comparison, Democratic senators and presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have missed 1.8 percent and 6.4 percent of their votes, respectively.
Said Pearce, a Mesa Republican:
"I'm concerned. We've got some major major votes going on in the Congress, the Senate. These are times we need a senator. Arizona elected a senator to be there. If McCain wants to be a full-time candidate for president, then he ought to consider resigning."
If McCain were to step down, Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano would select his replacement. When asked whether that would be preferable to McCain, Pearce replied: "Even poor representation perhaps is better than no representation." |
