Washington DC - Democrats voted today to seat their candidate in a hotly disputed congressional race and, in a dramatic demonstration of partisan animosity, Republican lawmakers marched out of the House chamber in protest.

The vote was 235 to 190, as 10 Democrats bolted party ranks to join the Republicans in opposing the resolution to seat Frank McCloskey as the winner in Indiana's Eighth District...

House Speaker Thomas P. O'Neill Jr. swore in McCloskey, who was declared the winner after an exhaustive recount supervised by the House...

After the vote to seat McCloskey, the Republicans tried to adjourn the House. When that move was brushed aside, the Republican members, 182 of them at full strength, marched down a side aisle of the House... and walked out...
