DescriptionHELENA - Democratic Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer is a bully, his Republican predecessor told a GOP gathering without mentioning Schweitzer by name.

''It is not about doing the right thing with this executive branch leader,'' former Gov. Judy Martz said Saturday in Helena. ''It is all about him.'' She said Schweitzer ''believes that you can mask your personal insecurities by acting like a political bully.''

Schweitzer spokeswoman Sarah Elliott declined to comment on the remarks Martz delivered at the annual Lincoln-Reagan Day dinner held by the Lewis and Clark County Republican Central Committee.

Martz was elected governor in 2000 and did not seek a second term. Her job approval rating fell to a low of about 20 percent, which she attributed largely to a worsening economy that hurt state finances and required her to make unpopular cuts in government services. She has returned to her hometown of Butte and serves on the boards of several national business and nonprofit groups.
