DescriptionTHE additional member system for electing the Scottish parliament is designed to ensure that the number of MSPs elected to Holyrood broadly reflects the total votes cast for each party.

A total of 56 MSPs will be elected from the eight regional lists across Scotland. The political parties determine who heads their lists and thus who is most likely to be elected.

However, it is in the 73 constituencies elected under the first-past-the-post system that the political battle will be joined, with a relatively small number of key seats determining the election's outcome.

Over the next five weeks, The Scotsman will be highlighting the contest in these seats as we seek to take the political pulse of the nation in the run-up to what is set to be the most critical Holyrood election since the advent of devolution.
