An excerpt...
"Gov. Ed Rendell said Monday that he backs Philadelphia County Judge C. Darnell Jones II for the Democratic nomination for the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and berated the Democratic State Committee for endorsing other competitors.
"I'll campaign for him, I'll raise money for him" and appeal to voters through direct mailings if Jones wants him to, the governor said at a Pennsylvania Press Club luncheon in a packed ballroom at a downtown hotel.
Two seats on the state's highest court are open this year. Four Democrats have filed papers to compete in the May 15 primary.
Prior to the Feb. 10 endorsement meeting, Rendell asked state committee members not to endorse any Supreme Court hopefuls. That would have given an advantage to the only two Democratic candidates who received the top "highly recommended" nod from a state bar panel — Jones, president judge of the Philadelphia Common Pleas Court, and Superior Court Judge Debra Todd of Allegheny County.
The state committee ignored his advice and endorsed Todd and Superior Court Judge Seamus P. McCaffery of Philadelphia.
Rendell and state Democratic Party Chairman T.J. Rooney had argued prior to the endorsements that a Jones-Todd ticket also would appeal to two of the party's most important constituencies — blacks and women. Jones is black and both Todd and McCaffery are white.
On Monday, Rendell called it "absolutely unconscionable and shocking" that the Democratic Party, which "owes its very survival to minority voters," would spurn Jones' candidacy." |
