Brunner is winning Republicans’ grudging respect

| Description | When Democrat Jennifer Brunner was elected in November, she appeared primed to bring tranquility back to the Ohio secretary of state’s office.
Her predecessor, Republican Ken Blackwell, was noisy, charismatic and controversial. Brunner—a relatively low-profile former Franklin County common pleas judge who waged a rather uneventful statewide campaign—seemed just the opposite.
But since taking office in January, Brunner’s generated enough ink that Blackwell himself might be inclined to tip his hat to her.
Brunner said this week she hadn’t expected to be making so much news this early. “I haven’t held a press conference yet,” she said. “I’m just trying to do my job.”
Surprisingly, some Republicans sound like they appreciate the effort.
“It is nice to have somebody finally in the office who wants to do the job,” said state Sen. Jeff Jacobson, the Senate Republicans’ point man on elections issues. |
