Description | The Clayton Republican businessman will push a conservative agenda

RALEIGH - State Sen. Fred Smith said Friday that he will seek the Republican nomination for governor in 2008.
The Clayton businessman pledged that as governor he would fight illegal immigration, support a state referendum to ban gay marriage and protect private property rights.
He is the second candidate to formally announce in the race to replace Gov. Mike Easley. Former Supreme Court Justice Bob Orr announced his campaign in January.
Anti-tax activist Bill Graham is also expected to join the race.
Recent public opinion polls show that none of the potential candidates so far have a substantial lead among state voters in the Republican primary, which will be held in mid-2008.
But Smith, who played football at Wake Forest University, said it is still early.
"That's nothing more than the first down in a long football game," he said. |
