DescriptionBOISE -- Bowlers, go ahead and light up.

Governor Butch Otter today vetoed a bill that would have banned smoking in bowling alleys.

It cleared the House and Senate.

But Otter says it took away the private property rights of business owners who wanted to continue to allow it.

The governor also took a jab at lawmakers including House Majority Leader Mike Moyle, who earlier this year described as "social engineering" Otter's plan to give more tax relief to low-income residents by boosting the grocery tax credit to as much as $90.

Otter says, "Given legislative concerns about social engineering, particularly in regard to my proposal for targeted expansion of the grocery tax credit, in the interest of consistency it seems reasonable to conclude that such concern would extend to this legislation as well."
