President Signs Hare's Bill Honoring Lane Evans
Rock Island Post Office to be Dedicated in Former Congressman's Honor
WASHINGTON, DC-Congressman Phil Hare (D-IL) today released the following statement after President Bush signed H.R. 521, Hare's bill to designate the United States Postal Service facility located at 2633 11th St. in Rock Island as the "Lane Evans Post Office Building."
"With the President's signature today, the Lane Evans Post Office Building is now official. I was deeply honored to serve on Lane's staff for over 23 years, and as his successor, I am humbled by the record of achievement he leaves behind.
"Lane's legacy is twofold— he was both a personable representative whose constituent service was second to none and a ferocious warrior who fought everyday on behalf of the brave men and women who served our country in the armed forces.
"Whether at a town hall meeting in the 17th District or an official visit to a far corner of the world, Lane was best known for his kindness and compassion.
"Members of both political parties, including my friend and co-author of this bill, Ray LaHood (R-IL) , remember Lane for his good heart and warm smile.
"This post office is a small but important token of appreciation from a grateful nation. I look forward to joining Lane at the naming ceremony sometime soon."
