DescriptionA soldier who served in Iraq and Bosnia is considering running for Congress if Democratic Rep. Tom Allen vacates the seat to challenge Republican Sen. Susan Collins.

"If Rep. Tom Allen runs for the U.S. Senate in 2008, I intend to be in a strong position to run for the First District seat. I have served my country overseas. I would now like to serve Maine's interests in Congress," Adam Cote said Thursday.

Allen, a six-term incumbent from Portland, has signaled he may run against Collins next year but has not announced he will do so. In anticipation of such a step by Allen, numerous Maine Democrats have been eyeing what could become an open congressional seat.

Mark Lawrence, district attorney in York County, and Portland's Michael Brennan, the former Democratic leader of the Senate, have formed exploratory committees. Chellie Pingree is stepping down from her post as president of Common Cause to consider a run.

Cote, an attorney at Pierce Atwood LLC, served with Maine's 133rd Engineer Battalion in Iraq in 2004 and 2005 and was in a mess hall in Mosul when a suicide bomb struck, killing or injuring about 100 soldiers and civilians.

He founded the Adopt an Iraqi Village program to provide clothes, school supplies and gifts to Iraqi children.
