Description | FORT MYERS -- In the Lee County Commission chambers, Robert E. Lee looms larger than life.
His hat in one hand, his sword in the other, he gazes out from a giant portrait that overlooks elected officials and anyone who comes before them.
To many residents of this sprawling southwest Florida county, the picture is a fitting tribute to the man their home was named after -- a piece of county history.
But to Willie Green and some civil-rights activists, the painting of the Confederate general -- the only artwork in the room -- is a stinging reminder of a time when blacks were considered property. |
