Description | COLUMBUS, Ohio: A symbolic Republican resolution supporting President George W. Bush's plan to relocate thousands of Iraqi refugees unanimously cleared the state Senate on Tuesday without any reference to critical comments by the Democratic governor.
Republicans, who control the state Legislature, agreed to delete references to Gov. Ted Strickland's comments indicating that he would not welcome the refugees to Ohio because the governor has since apologized, state Sen. Kevin Coughlin said.
The resolution is needed to correct Ohio's reputation, said Coughlin, who sponsored the measure.
"During this time, it can be assumed that people worldwide got the wrong idea about Ohio, its people and its generosity," he told members of a Senate committee on state and local government and veterans affairs.
The nine-member committee adopted the resolution unanimously before sending it to the full Senate, which also passed it without a dissenting vote. |
