Description | Philadelphia Inquirer article.
An excerpt...
"The waiting room of the U.S. Attorney's Office in Newark, N.J., is dreary in the way typical of old government buildings, but an arresting reminder of the power of this place hangs along one of the walls.
There, a visitor can peruse the portraits of the former U.S. attorneys for the District of New Jersey. Among the most recent are Michael Chertoff, now the nation's homeland security chief, and Samuel Alito, the latest addition to the U.S. Supreme Court.
The implications are clear: This is a prominent job, and those who do it well will be heard from again.
Friends and colleagues say the current office-holder, Christopher J. Christie, is doing the job well, and they believe he will be heard from again - possibly as soon as New Jersey's 2009 gubernatorial race.
With an unprecedented onslaught against political corruption, Christie, 44, has garnered big headlines and effusive praise in the last five years.
"He's not the first U.S. attorney to make political corruption a flagship unit," said Stephen J. Taylor, a former head of the Terrorism Unit in Christie's office, "but I think Chris has taken it to another level, taking on heretofore untouchable political figures."
Now Christie's office seems poised for its biggest fight yet.
In the last two weeks, his prosecutors essentially have subpoenaed the entire Legislature and the governor's office, seeking information on the last-minute grants that regularly get added to the state budget." |
