Description | Since 1981, National Journal's annual vote ratings have defined where members of Congress stand ideologically. The ratings rank lawmakers on how they vote relative to each other on a conservative-to-liberal scale in both the Senate and the House. The scores are based on the members' votes in three areas: economic issues, social issues, and foreign policy.
The two GOP member with the highest Liberal composite score: Jim Leach with a score of 61.5 and Ron Paul with a score of 61.
The three Democrats with the highest Conservative composite score: Dan Boren with a score of 50.8, and Jim Marshall and Gene Taylor with a score of 50.
The most conservative member: Jim Ryun
The most liberal member: Diane Watson
The three members at the center of the ratings: Jim Marshall, Gene Taylor, and Vernon Ehlers.
