DescriptionEDITORIAL DEATH OF MORRIE MUHLEMAN
Muhleman helped make community great

Rock Island, in particular, and the Quad-Cities, in general, lost a true friend Wednesday with the death of former Rock Island mayor Morris E. `Morrie' Muhleman.

Mr. Muhleman, 83, a lifelong resident of Rock Island, was residing at the Heartland Health Care Center in Moline at the time of his death.

Visitation for Mr. Muhleman will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, Rock Island, with burial at Chippiannock Cemetery, Rock Island.

Prior to becoming Rock Island's mayor, Mr. Muhleman served the public as Rock Island County sheriff from 1950 to 1954. In 1954, he was elected to the Illinois Senate.

Following his term as mayor, Mr. Muhleman served as manager of the Centennial Bridge from 1965 to 1980. As in every position he held -- to include the presidency of the Rock Island Chamber of Commerce, the Rock Island County Fair Association, the Rock Island County Polio Chapter, the Rock Island Retail Bureau, the Rock Island Kiwanis Club and the Rock Island Junior Chamber of Commerce -- he served honorably and without question as to his integrity.

Few persons gave so much to this community as Mr. Muhleman. He is remembered as a man of pleasant manner and character whose wor
