Description | Former Lt. Gov. Harriett Woods died Thursday night at her home in University City -- "Where she wanted to be," said her son, Andrew Woods.
Mrs. Woods was 79 and had been ill with leukemia. "That was the only thing strong enough to take her," said her son as he confirmed the death this morning.
Mrs. Woods was elected lieutenant governor in 1984, becoming the first woman ever elected to a statewide office in Missouri. She served until 1989.
