DescriptionLouisiana Senator David Vitter said Thursday that when President Bush presents his 2008 budget to congress on Monday it will include significant flood control changes for southeast Louisiana.

Vitter said the budget for the Army Corps of Engineers will move $1.3 billion in projects on the Eastbank, including the armoring of levees and work on the pump stations at the outflow canals on the lake, and move it to flood control work mostly on the Westbank.

“We shouldn’t be robbing Peter to pay Paul,” said Vitter. “I’m just afraid that moving this around is really going to delay the whole fix, and mean two or three years loss in terms of that very, very important fix.”

Vitter said he has not received any official reason as to why the money was being moved.

“Part of the justification is, well some of the work on the Eastbank isn’t ready to go forward anyway. The problem is the Corps is working way too slowly and is mired in bureaucracy.”

Vitter said he was not opposed to the Westbank projects and planned to ask the president for an amendment to the budget to include another $1.3 billion.
