The conservative Club for Growth is upping the ante in its long-running dispute with the Republican Main Street Partnership by seeking a Federal Election Commission investigation of the centrist organization.
The Club is updating an FEC complaint filed in December against former Republican Rep. Joe Schwarz, charging the one-term Michigan congressman coordinated with Main Street's political action committee during his failed re-election bid last year.
If true, the charge could lead to a huge fine for Main Street and for Schwarz, who lost his Republican primary race to Rep. Tim Walberg, a freshman Republican who benefited greatly from the fund-raising largesse of Club donors.
David Keating, the Club's executive director, is expected to file its updated complaint Thursday, citing excerpts from a recently published book in which Schwarz's campaign manager Matt Marsden told the author that he had coordinated with Main Street's PAC during the campaign. FEC rules prohibit direct coordination between candidates and outside political action committees. |
