DescriptionMesa City Councilman Tom Rawles woke up to a firestorm Tuesday after refusing to stand up for the Pledge of Allegiance at a public meeting the night before.

Rawles said he plans to sit during the pledge as long as he remains in office as a protest to the war in Iraq. But his actions have angered many of the people he represents, including some who threatened to remove him from the city’s top political body.

“There have been thousands that have given their blood for that flag. You don’t disrespect it,” said Jerilyn Anderson, a 62-year-old Mesa resident.

Rawles, a Libertarian, said he protested publicly to persuade others to join him in opposing the war and to demand that American troops leave Iraq as soon as possible.
