Clark enters presidential race: Former NATO commander joins Democratic field

| Description | LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas (CNN) -- Moving to a new battlefield, Wesley Clark, the former NATO supreme commander, announced on Wednesday his presidential candidacy, joining a crowded field of Democrats hoping to oust George Bush in 2004.
"I'm here to announce that I intend to seek the presidency of the United States of America," Clark said at a kickoff rally in the city he and his wife call home.
A political novice, Clark, 58, becomes the 10th Democrat seeking the party's presidential nomination. He is a West Point graduate and Rhodes scholar who, as NATO commander, led U.S. and allied forces in NATO's 1999 air war in Kosovo.
"We're going to run a campaign that will move this country forward, not back -- and we're going to talk straight to the American people," he said, adding that his campaign would demand answers to "hard questions."
Clark thanked the volunteers who led an electoral draft effort aimed at bringing him into the race, saying, "You took an inconceivable idea and you made it conceivable."
"We are going to hold this administration accountable for its policies and their results, but remember: The results belong to all of us," he said. "They are the foundation upon which we must build anew." |
