An excerpt...
" State Rep. Ron Buxton wants to help you have a greater say in picking the next president.
Buxton, D-Harrisburg, will introduce a bill today to move Pennsylvania's 2008 primary election date to the first Tuesday in March -- about seven weeks earlier than usual. It would move the state to so-called "Super Tuesday," when several states hold their primaries and many presidential contenders are eliminated.
Most political scientists agree that Pennsylvania voters have not had a meaningful presidential primary since 1984, when Democratic voters here gave a boost to Walter Mondale in his race against Gary Hart.
With the 2008 primary set for April 22, that trend is not likely to change on its own.
Buxton said he believes moving the primary to March is the best way to "give our citizens a chance to impact the selection of a presidential candidate."
Such a move was also recommended by an elections task force commissioned by Gov. Ed Rendell in 2005, but the administration has never pushed for such a move with the General Assembly.
The Legislature and Rendell would have to approve Buxton's bill." |
