Description | It's been 6-and-a-half years since civil unions became legal in Vermont. The law sparked heated debate here and across the country. Furor over the same-sex unions furthered the "Take Back Vermont" movement. It was landmark legislation. Vermont lawmakers saw it as a compromise to gay marriage.
"The civil union law was a great first step. It was a toe in the water," said Beth Robinson of the Vt. Freedom to Marry Task Force.
Since then, several gay marriage bills have been drafted with little movement in the Legislature. Gay marriage advocates say this will be their year with democrats in commanding control of the Legislature. And they point out that Vermont would NOT be blazing the trail this time.
"The world has changed so much since 2000, and we've got marriage equality to the south of us in Massachusetts, and marriage equality to the north of us in Canada," said Robinson. "We knew then the conversation wasn't over and the time is right to come back to the table and move forward."
"I say that's a poor sales pitch," said Craig Bensen of Take It To The People.
