DescriptionWASHINGTON - It was a week of many firsts for Pleasanton wind energy guru Jerry McNerney, the newly elected congressman from California's 11th district.

He turned the key in his congressional office for the first time on Wednesday morning.

He cast his first vote on the floor of the House on Thursday, helping elect the nation's first woman speaker of the House, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco.

After he took the oath of office as a full member of the "people's house," the 55-year-old freshman joined his Democratic colleagues and used his electronic voting card for the first time in support of the first five initiatives of his party's 100-hour policy agenda.

And the man who once feared public speaking delivered his first speech on the floor. It was more of a brief statement than a speech, really, but he spoke succinctly in favor of the Democratic leaders' ethics reform package.

When asked how it felt to finally find himself in Congress, after more than four years of campaigning, he turned and smiled.

"It's messy," he said. "But it feels good. Whatever the forces were that brought me here, it's good."
