DescriptionThe loud hum of de-humidifiers fills the dank basement of the Florida Supreme Court, where a Christmas weekend deluge caused another round of flooding amid the musty old law books and hundreds of ponderous legal tomes from all over the nation.

The 2006 Legislature put up $2.5 million to enjoin the flooding, but Gov. Jeb Bush vetoed that line in the budget. Court officials, who have already thrown away about $50,000 worth of mold-infested books, figure it costs about $78,000 a year to keep the air quality at safe levels, plus $1,000 in cleaning costs every time the Capitol complex gets a downpour.
