Ciro dials for dollars: Democrat Ciro Rodriguez spent most of Wednesday in a downtown law office slogging through a task he'd rarely carried out with any zeal: dialing for dollars.

Adrian Saenz of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee sat nearby, helping to keep Rodriguez — who's facing U.S. Rep. Henry Bonilla in a December runoff — on task. After a couple of hours, campaign volunteers took over for Saenz.

The party operative, who arrived in town Tuesday, described the session as part of an "indoctrinating process," an effort to get Rodriguez to be more systematic about campaign fundraising.

"The last thing I want to see is a phone line," Rodriguez said. "But I feel good — it's starting to come together."

The exercise also said something about national Democrats' interest in the 23rd Congressional District race.

"It's a competitive enough race that we're going to be involved in it," said Saenz, the DCCC's national field director and a former staffer for Rep. Charlie Gonzalez, D-San Antonio. "We're pretty deep into the campaign."

Saenz said the committee wants to have a professional fundraiser in the next few days. The DCCC, he added, also could help recruit for other positions, such as a media-relations specialist and scheduler.

But whether the committee opens its wallet for bigger-ticket items, such as television and radio advertising and targeted mail-outs, remains to be seen. That kind of commitment could depend on the results of a DCCC-funded poll under way this week.
