Description | Just two years ago, U.S. Rep. Charles “Charlie” Melancon, D-Napoleonville, was representing farmers as president of the American Sugar Cane League in Thibodeaux.
Now, after last week’s mid-term congressional election, Melancon is a crucial vote in the swinging door of power in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The Blue Dog Coalition of conservative Democrats showed off their new-found political muscle Wednesday, saying their 44-member caucus, which includes Melancon, will be a force to be reckoned with now that the Democrats hold a 33-seat advantage in the House.
And Melancon, who comes from a district that voted 58 percent for Bush in 2004, is viewed as a key member of the group.
