DescriptionArmy Gen. John Abizaid, the top American commander for the Middle East, on Wednesday rejected a proposal to begin withdrawing U.S. forces from Iraq within six months, an emerging strategy among Democrats emboldened by midterm elections that swept them to power in Congress.

Removing U.S. troops would only further destabilize Iraq and increase the violence, said Abizaid in his first appearance before a congressional panel since the elections that saw Democrats ride a surge of anti-war sentiment to achieve majorities in the House and Senate.

"I believe it (sectarian violence) would increase" if American forces are withdrawn, he said.

Committing to a withdrawal timetable inhibits the ability of American commanders to shift forces as needed, he told the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Numerous reviews of U.S. strategy in Iraq are now under way, including the reassessment by the congressionally mandated bipartisan commission headed by former Secretary of State James Baker and former Rep. Lee Hamilton, D-Ind.
