Description | A push is on by some members of Congress to see Rep. Jim Leach, R-Ia., named as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.
Leach, a 30-year veteran of the House and a foreign affairs expert, was defeated in the Nov. 7 election by Democrat David Loebsack of Mount Vernon.
Leach is the top Republican on the House International Relations
Committee and would have been in line for the chairmanship had he stayed in office and Republicans retained control.
He is the chairman of the subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific and has been a leading voice on policy toward North Korea.
Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., and Rep. James Walsh, R-N.Y., are developing a letter to other members proposing that Leach be named U.N. ambassador. |
