DescriptionThe Columbus Board of Education won’t pick its new member by Nov. 17 after all, the board announced yesterday.

Saying they want to widen the pool of candidates, board members decided to reopen the application process until Dec. 4.

Fourteen people already have applied to fill member Karen Schwarzwalder’s seat, submitting applications by last Monday’s deadline. The board had planned to choose a new member to replace Schwarzwalder, who is moving to Findlay and served 11 years on the board, by Nov. 17.

The first round of applicants included teachers, a radio talkshow host, an aide to a state representative and a truck driver.

"Our goal is to fill the vacancy with the right person," board President Terry Boyd said in a news release.

Boyd also said the board is seeking someone who can understand the board’s new style of governance.

It’s making a transition to a complex style of operating called policy governance, in which boards set policy and rigorously monitor organizational performance for compliance through a manual that includes 40 policies.
