| Description | Maricopa County voters rejected four of five incumbents running for re-election to the Central Arizona Project board, which oversees more than half the state's share of Colorado River water.
Among those who lost were William Perry, the current board president, and George Renner, the longest-serving board member and former president. George Brooks, an environmental scientist, and Frank Barrios, a career water manager, also lost.
The only incumbent to survive was Lisa Atkins, a former congressional aide who was appointed to the board in 2003. She received the most votes among the 12 non-partisan candidates.
Joining the board of what is formally called the Central Arizona Water Conservation District: former state Rep. Jean McGrath, former Mesa City Councilwoman Janie Thom, businesswoman Gayle Burns and educator Pam Pickard.
With their election, women now comprise a majority on the board, which includes representatives from Maricopa, Pinal and Pima counties. The 15 board members earn no salary for their work. |
