DescriptionPEORIA - State Rep. Aaron Schock easily won a second term to the state House Tuesday night over City Councilman Bill Spears.
Schock received 14,442 votes, or 59 percent, to Spears' 10,002 votes, or 41 percent.

Claiming victory, the 25-year-old Peoria Republican further secured his place in Peoria politics, twice breaking through the district's Democratic stronghold.

"I think what it speaks to, number one, is the independence of the voters in the 92nd District. I was told two years ago that it couldn't be done . . . and clearly the voters disagreed," Schock said. "Before a Democrat or a Republican, what voters want is someone who will work hard and be responsive."

Two years ago, Schock took the town by surprise, defeating an eight-year incumbent by 230 votes at just 23 years old, heading to Springfield as the youngest member of the General Assembly.

Democrats vowed then that Schock would not go unchallenged in 2006.

Spears, 49, a 14-year incumbent on the City Council, accepted the challenge after some minor cajoling and appeared early on to be a viable opponent.

Spears was born and raised in the district and has been involved in local politics for years. His six brothers also live in town and the family's governmental involvement has made Spears a household name.

But despite pouring thousands of dollars into largely negative radio and television ads, Spears failed to make significant inroads into Schock's popularity.
