DescriptionVacation is over and during the summer the conventional wisdom that Democrats have little chance of success in the 2004 race for control of the U.S. Senate has been turned on its head. During the month of August, President Bush and Republican members of Congress did everything they could to backpedal, sidestep, duck and dodge the issues concerning this country. From the economy to homeland security, education, health care and the environment, Republicans have failed miserably to convince people that they have real solutions to the nation's problems, and the failed Republican economic policies and the jobless recovery have dogged the President and Republican members of Congress all summer.

The Republicans failure to lead is having a demonstrative impact on the race for control of the U.S. Senate. In fact, all over the country, top-tier Republican candidates are turning down Karl Rove's entreaties to challenge our incumbents while we have recruited eager top-tier candidates to challenge Republican incumbents in Alaska, Pennsylvania and Missouri. From Washington State to Nevada, North Dakota, Illinois, Florida and California Republicans have failed to land a single top-tier recruit to challenge our incumbents (WA, NV, CA, ND) or to compete in open seats (IL) or potential open seat contests (FL).
