Description | Using his family's legacy and stressing affordability and senior issues, state Sen. Thomas H. Kean Jr., R-Westfield, tried Tuesday to gain some of the black, urban vote -- a population that usually doesn't vote for Republicans not named Kean.
Trailing 49 percent to 44 percent to U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez in a Quinnipiac University poll released Tuesday, Kean told a senior citizen group at the Metropolitan Baptist Church he will fight to make living in New Jersey more affordable by tackling corruption and government spending and helping the state get more federal funding.
"It's simply becoming too unaffordable for too many people," Kean said to some applause and a few amens. "And as a result of that affordability, people are giving up hope on the promise of New Jersey."
Several audience questions mentioned that it's common for politicians to make appearances and promises before Election Day without coming back. Kean said, "I will be back here, not only early but often, after I'm elected to continue our conversation."
