DescriptionDemocratic State Rep. Derek Kilmer hopes to move to the state Senate when the votes are counted Nov. 7, but Republican newcomer Jim Hines wants to out-poll him to take the seat.

Both men are from Gig Harbor and the winner will succeed retiring Sen. Bob Oke, a Port Orchard Republican.

"Two years ago, people in our area decided they wanted a change," Kilmer says of his election to the House in 2004. "They wanted someone who would work in a bipartisan, centrist manner who could get real results on their priorities. I’m proud to say I have delivered."

Hines hopes the name he has made for himself in campaigning statewide for tougher sex-offender laws will help him overcome Kilmer’s huge lead in campaign funds and small margin in the primary.
