DescriptionHouse Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) today began testifying in an ethics probe that centers around when he and his staff learned about former congressman Mark Foley's messages to teenage male pages--and what they did about them.

Hastert became the fifth member of Congress to appear before the House ethics subcommittee, which has been sorting out how House Republican leaders responded to repeated warnings about Foley's conduct. Two House Republicans--Majority Leader John A. Boehner (Ohio) and Rep. Thomas M. Reynolds (R.-N.Y.)--have said they spoke briefly with Hastert and his staff about ambiguous e-mails Foley sent to a teenage boy in Louisiana, alarming the youth and his parents.

Hastert has said he does not recall such conversations.
