| Description | The Long Beach City Council has unanimously approved a resolution supporting gay marriage.
The council is urging passage of state and federal laws to legalize the unions.
Councilman Patrick O'Donnell says it's a civil rights issue he calls pretty black and white.
The measure passed Tuesday has no legal force but backers say it symbolizes support for the city's tens of thousands of gay residents now that a state appeals court has upheld a ban on gay marriage.
Thirty-eight other California cities have passed similar measures.
