DescriptionFor months now, Republican lawyer Joe Lavigne has portrayed himself as the GOP's choice to unseat Democrat William Jefferson in the Nov. 7 race to fill the 2nd District Congressional seat.

But that's not how some of the most prominent local Republican powerbrokers see it.

A trio of top-tier Republican fund raisers have instead cast their lot with state Rep. Karen Carter, one of three well-known Democratic challengers in the crowded field.

New Orleans developer Joe Canizaro and Lockport shipbuilder Donald "Boysie" Bollinger, two of President Bush's most prolific Louisiana financial supporters, are hosting a Sept. 26 fund raiser for Carter. And Phyllis Taylor, the widow of oil man Patrick Taylor, a major Republican Party donor, also has signed onto the Carter campaign.

In addition to cash and access to deep-pocketed contributors, Canizaro, Bollinger and Taylor provide Carter with a de facto stamp of approval for other Republicans, who comprise less than 10 percent of the 2nd District's electorate.

The bipartisan support for Carter, who is also backed by big-name Democrats like former U.S. Sens. John Breaux and J. Bennett Johnston, as well as ex-Congressman Chris John, is not good news for political newcomer Lavigne, who launched his campaign last spring and has raised $250,000 so far.
