Description | As violence claimed more lives in Iraq on Thursday, Iraqi forces took over control of a province in the south from Italian troops, who are expected to be withdrawn by year's end.
When Iraqi forces formally took over security of Dhi Qar from Italian troops on Thursday, the southern province became the second of 18 provinces to come under local control, the AP reported.
Italy has about 1,600 troops in the country. Its military has reported 32 deaths, 19 of them when a military barracks was bombed in 2003, according to AP. The troops are expected to be out by year's end, the AP reported.
Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has said that Iraqi army and police plan to take over security for all of Iraq's provinces within the next 18 months. British troops handed over control of southern Muthana province in July, the AP reported.
