DescriptionSeattle attorney and gay rights activist Jamie Pedersen led the pack of six Democratic candidates vying for the state's most coveted House seat as election returns trickled in Tuesday night.

Jim Street was a very close second, ahead of the other four candidates in the most expensive state House race in Washington's history. In the heavily Democratic 43rd Legislative District, the winner of Tuesday's primary is almost assured the seat.

Fewer than 5,000 votes could give a candidate the plurality, and the margin of victory could be thin, so the final outcome may remain un- known until later this week when all the mail-in ballots are tallied.

As the election party at his home wound down late last night, Pedersen said he was feeling positive but he refused to declare victory.

"We are just going to have to keep watching to for the next few days," he said "We won't really know the answer to the question for a while ... chances are we won't know until Thursday or Friday."

Street, who held the runner up position throughout the evening, said he would not concede.
