DescriptionMINNEAPOLIS - Supporters of Republican Mark Kennedy's U.S. Senate bid worked Monday to counter perceptions of a struggling campaign, after a new poll showed Democrat Amy Klobuchar with a whopping lead less than two months from Election Day.

"We're very comfortable with where we're at right now," Kennedy spokeswoman Heidi Frederickson said. "When people get engaged in this race and find out where Mark Kennedy stands and where Amy Klobuchar stands, then Mark Kennedy wins."

A Star Tribune Minnesota Poll released late Sunday put Klobuchar, the Hennepin County attorney, at 56 percent compared to 32 percent for Kennedy, the state's 6th District congressman. Independence Party candidate Robert Fitzgerald had 3 percent.

The Kennedy campaign and Republican supporters harshly criticized those results, saying the newspaper's poll has a history of bias against Republican candidates. But some Republicans acknowledged the numbers, together with several other polls showing Klobuchar with a smaller but still significant lead, could spell trouble for Kennedy as he vies for financial support and national GOP resources vital to keeping his campaign vibrant.

"Bad poll numbers are a factor - even if you don't believe them," said David Hill, a Houston-based Republican political consultant and pollster. "They can have a chilling effect on fundraising. A candidate could find it even harder to raise money, especially in-state, so that factors into this whole complex math of who has the best chances."
