Description | NEW ORLEANS (AP) — State Rep. Karen Carter, one of a dozen challengers facing beleaguered incumbent U.S. Rep. William Jefferson this fall, picked up endorsements from two New Orleans City Council members Tuesday.
Oliver Thomas and Cynthia Morrell both announced their backing of Carter during a brief news conference outside City Hall. All three are Democrats.
While there was no mention of Jefferson's legal problems — the eight-term congressman is the subject of a federal investigation into alleged illegal business dealings — Thomas said Carter was the best candidate to provide "engaged leadership, not distracted from the issues of recovery at hand for New Orleans and Jefferson Parish." |
