Description | The year was 1999. Thousands of teachers had walked off their jobs early on a school day to rally at the state capital in Olympia to demand higher pay.
One after another, lawmakers fanned the crowd’s fervor with sympathetic rhetoric. Then, one Democratic state senator stepped up to the microphone.
“Get back to work!” his voice boomed.
The crowd was stunned.
That’s not what teachers were expecting to hear. Not from a Democrat. Not from a member of the party that’s supposed to support the needs of labor unions, especially those of public employees.
But Tim Sheldon, the man at the microphone, is no ordinary Democrat.
For years he’s regularly broken ranks with party colleagues, siding with Republicans on crucial Senate votes, giving money to Republican candidates and campaigning for George Bush for president and Dino Rossi for governor.
As a result, Democratic Party loyalists are out to get him. State party officials, as well as leaders of all four county Democrat organizations in the 35th District, on Tuesday formally endorsed Sheldon’s primary opponent, Kyle Taylor Lucas, and condemned Sheldon. |
