It's just a quick elevator ride from the spacious banquet room where Ken Blackwell spoke Monday morning to a rented suite on the top floor of a Columbus Holiday Inn where Bill Peirce, the Libertarian candidate for Ohio governor, stood alone.

But it might as well have been on the other side of the universe. Downstairs, Blackwell spoke about jumpstarting Ohio's economy before a packed house of Central Ohio chamber of commerce officials as print reporters scribbled, cameras flashed and video cameras whirred, capturing his every word. He followed his Democratic opponent, Ted Strickland, who bathed in much the same limelight.

Upstairs, Peirce was accompanied by a table displaying neat rows of carefully folded "Peirce for governor" T-shirts and campaign literature. A pair of poster boards that read "Free to Prosper" stood flanking an empty lectern.

It was supposed to be a morning in the sun for Peirce, who was invited to speak at the gubernatorial forum before having the offer rescinded when his major party opponents pressured the Westerville Chamber of Commerce hosts, he said.
