DescriptionThe move was unorthodox, maybe even unethical, some said.

But U.S. Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick's (R., Pa.) chief of staff was unfazed as he barged into an invitation-only telephone news conference Friday hosted by Fitzpatrick's Democratic opponent in the Eighth Congressional District, Patrick Murphy.

Mike Conallen, who works in Fitzpatrick's Washington office, interrupted the working news media to badger Murphy about debating Fitzpatrick.

"I do think ambushing him at a press conference was a bit tacky," said one of the journalists. Another accused him of "hijacking" the session.

Fitzpatrick, reached later, said he didn't tell Conallen to make the call, but was "proud" of him for "pinning Murphy down."

"That's what press conferences are for," he said.
