DescriptionAdults in Russia are divided on the possibility of their president officially joining the country’s most popular political organization, according to a poll by the Yury Levada Analytical Center. 43 per cent of respondents think it would be negative for the country if Vladimir Putin becomes the leader of the United Russia (YR) party, while 34 believe it would be positive.

The next election to the State Duma is tentatively scheduled for December 2007. In the December 2003 legislative ballot, United Russia—a new name for the Inter-Regional Movement of the Russian Federation—received 37.6 per cent of the vote and secured 222 members in the 450-seat lower house. United Russia openly supports Putin, who was elected to a second term as president in March 2004.
