DescriptionMany Democrats contended that Bean’s outgoing personality, background as a businesswoman and positioning as a Democratic moderate held sway in a mostly affluent suburban Chicago district that leans Republican. Republicans, on the contrary, generally blamed their loss on Crane, saying he had grown aloof and complacent — and proceeded to put Bean near the top of their target list for the 2006 election.

Who is right will get firmly tested this November, as Bean faces Republican nominee David McSweeney, an investment banker who is well-versed on federal issues and also has the resources to at least compete with the well-funded Bean.

But it is clear that defeating Bean will be more difficult than GOP strategists might have anticipated at the beginning of the year.

Bean has gained notice for her regular appearances in the district, a departure from Crane; developed a robust constituent service operation; and built a freshman-term record in which she mostly aligns with liberal Democrats on social issues but often sides with the business community — and their Republican allies — on fiscal questions.
