On Wednesday night, the School Committee chose Whitten, the interim superintendent for Melrose Public Schools, on a 4-to-3 vote. The decision came as a disappointment to many residents, who had spent weeks lobbying for Arthur Nicholson -- a beloved local who has worked for Methuen schools in various capacities for the past 39 years -- to become the district's next leader.
