DescriptionPhiladelphia Inquirer article.

An excerpt...
"Some say this is a reward for his having agreed to not oppose Lt. Gov. Catherine Baker Knoll in May."

"At a time when business-as-usual in Harrisburg is under attack, former U.S. Rep. Joe Hoeffel found himself on the defensive yesterday for taking a six-figure job in the Rendell administration.

Hoeffel's appointment to the $104,431-a-year job as deputy secretary for international business in the Department of Community and Economic Development was denounced by critics who saw it as payback for his withdrawing from the Democratic primary against Lt. Gov. Catherine Baker Knoll.

The announcement was made Monday.

Rendell asked Hoeffel not to run in the May 16 primary against Baker Knoll, a Pittsburgh native with a strong political base in Western Pennsylvania.

"This is the deal that was made so he wouldn't challenge Catherine Baker Knoll in the primary and Ed wouldn't lose support in Western Pennsylvania," said Russ Diamond, an independent candidate for governor and cofounder of PACleanSweep, the grassroots group that fought the pay raise that legislators voted for themselves last year.

Not so, said the former Democratic congressman from Montgomery County."
