DescriptionRivals for an Assembly seat in the 14th District bickered yesterday over a candidate's claim to be "born and raised" in Hamilton, in the latest personal exchange in what is shaping up to be a bruising, bitterly fought election campaign.

Incumbent Assemblyman Gary Guear, D-Hamilton, yesterday accused his GOP challenger Bill Baroni of misrepresenting himself in campaign material as being born in Hamilton when Baroni in fact began life at a hospital in Jacksonville, Fla.

"It is clear that he will stoop to any level to misrepresent himself for the sake of gaining favor with Hamiltonians and residents of the 14th District," Guear said in a press release yesterday under the headline, `Guear to Baroni: Where Were You Born?'

Baroni, a Mercer County attorney, called the charge "crude and hurtful," saying that he was brought to Hamilton when he was less than two months old by adoptive parents and spent his entire childhood there.

"Most people, if you're eight weeks old, you feel you're born in the town," he said. "He can make hyper-technical arguments, but it strains reason why Gary would say this."

In his own release yesterday, Baroni went on to say, "While the campaign flyer may technically have included a typographical error, no one doubts that I am, and always have been, a Hamiltonian. I played Little League baseball and recreational soccer here. I went to Langtree Elementary, Reynolds Middle and Steinert High schools. I have even purchased a home here in Hamilton in the neighborhood next to my father, who still lives in the house I grew up in."
